How to set up your Facebook business page

Aug 31, 2011 9:00 AM
by Flavio Mester

A Facebook business page is a public profile that enables you to share your business and products with Facebook users. It works in tandem with your website by allowing you to engage with your audience in a more interactive way. It can be a powerful and positive factor to increase your website traffic, and ultimately benefit your business.

1. Create your Facebook business page

YWD Facebook pageYour Facebook business page is hosted by Facebook, separately from your pregular YWD website. To create it go to www.facebook.com/business/pages

2. Set up your Facebook tab(s)

Next, add one or more custom tabs to your Facebook page. The tabs are created using their Static HTML:iframe app. Its usage is not straightfoward, but this  good online tutorial explains how to do it.

3. Assign pages from your YWD website to your tabs

You can use content managed through Your Web Department to "feed" your Facebook page's tabs. This way the tabs can contain YWD tools such as content sliders, image galleries, forms, etc.

For instance, on our own Facebook page at www.facebook.com/yourwebdepartment the content from the "Hello!" tab is coming from our website in YWD. The area reserved by Facebook's Static IFrame app is just 500 x 850 pixels. So in order to avoid scrollbars:

  • Create a separate page for your Facebook page. Make sure you hide it from the website's navigation by editing the page properties and unchecking Top, Main and Bottom. This way a link to the page will not appear on the regular website's navigation.
  • In the Special tab set the Facebook page? field to yes. This will override your website's page width, setting it to 500px so it fits within Facebook's page layout. (image 1 and 2)
  • You'll probably want to hide most (or all) of the layouts elements -- the banner, the left and right columns, all forms of navigation, bottom widgets.
  • Depending on your website's design settings, you may need to change the page background or the content area background (using a white image for the background, for example)
  • Save the page properties.
  • Make sure the content for that page (e.g. any tables, images, content sliders, galleries etc.) is narrower than 500 pixels and not very long (about 850 pixels or less), otherwise Facebook will add scrollbars.

Then, on your Facebook page, assign the URL of the YWD page to its Static IFrame app.

Time for Oldsters to embrace Facebook for business

Aug 29, 2011 9:00 AM
by Paul Chato

Gustavo, one of my partners at Your Web Department, suggested that I talk about Facebook from my perspective. What he meant by 'from my perspective' was as one of the oldsters out there. I'm north of 55 and I'm using Facebook and Twitter, etc. for business but that's not typical of my generation. As the guy assigned the job pounding the pavement I get to meet a LOT of business owners and most of them have an older perspective on their businesses. And frankly, the Internet is more of a distraction for them than a cause to be embraced. So if the pyramid of marketing pain looks like this:

Logo - "Got something. Not changing it."
Sales materials - "Yeah, printed, collecting dust in a room next to the washroom."
Unique Selling Proposition - "I have no idea what that is."
Website - "Sure, my competition has one, so I got one. I don't know anything about it."
Facebook business page - "My daughter puts half-naked pictures of herself on Facebook. I'm tossing her out of the house. Why should I be there?"
Twitter - "You mean what birds do?"
LinkedIn - "Is that some kind of couples swapping site?"

The above describes the majority of small business owners attitude to their ENTIRE marking efforts. And even for those who have nominally embraced the Internet, each new thing just brings on a sigh and rise in their anxiety level. If this is the way you feel, frankly, you have built your website incorrectly and you have the wrong website partners. Working your website should be an enjoyable experience. And part of that experience has to include Facebook. Don't worry, there are ways to not make it another burden.

Facebook as more than 750 million active users. And more importantly many have volunteered to put their interests and other info into their accounts. Facebook makes it WAY easier to find people who might be interested in what you're doing than Google Ads, which is a really blunt instrument in comparison.

And the new sales pitch is really social selling. You sell your personality and by talking about the things you feel excited about you will find others who share that same excitement. Those are the customers you want to have, right? If people start 'Liking' you then that's pretty powerful confirmation that you're on the right track. So think of that as instant research with feedback. Where else are you going to get that kind of research for free?

Now that still seems like a ton of work but you don't really have to do anything at the start. You can listen. Search Google for your company name, the category you're in. See how many mentions pop up. Get a Twitter account and search for your name, company name and category and see who's talking about it. You can also do this on LinkedIn. Not every tool is appropriate for your business, but if someone is talking about you online, wouldn't you like to know about it?

And if what people are saying is not so nice, then Facebook is a great place deal with it. Of course you have to have a following to make that work, but that's another topic and there is already a lot of information online that will tell you how to build your following.

The bottom line is Facebook is not just your teenager's tool any more. It should also be part of your business. Sticking (and keeping) your head in the sand is not an option. Even though many of us seem to wear that as a badge of courage. Everytime I hear someone proudly intone their ignorance and willful abandonment of the Internet, the first thing I think of is, "Boy, is this person stupid." Obviously, people not willing to help themselves are not going to take my advice. Hopefully, one day they will understand that a website combined with social media can not only be good for business but fun, too.

Video about: How Google makes improvements to its search algorithm

Aug 26, 2011 4:56 PM
by Gustavo Jabbaz

Interesting insight as how much thought and testing goes behind the results you get on each search.

Google's description:

"Here's a short video we put together that gives you a sense of the work that goes into the changes and improvements we make to Google almost every day. While an improvement to the algorithm may start with a creative idea, it always goes through a process of rigorous scientific testing."
