This past week: Last post of the month and last post that is all about Facebook. Recently Facebook made major announcements at the f8 2011 developers conference, they also made changes to their web interface. The changes to the interface were received with the typical annoyance from the users (regardless, no one is leaving Facebook); but the important changes are the ones we don't really see yet. Open Graph (http://developers.facebook.com/docs/opengraph/) and Timeline (http://www.facebook.com/about/timeline); with Open Graph sharing content will become easier and most important, Facebook will get to know you better every time you share something. This is not big brother watching you, this is Facebook looking at ways to display ads that matter to you. You are going to get ads anyway; why not get the ads that you are interested in? Timeline is the next big change, first to be delivered to personal profiles and hopefully (and expected) this feature will be extended to Business Pages. Then business will have a better opportunity to brand their pages and engage their fans in more creative ways. Summarizing, this changes are great news for SMBs and Marketers.
"Social media marketing, overall, proves its worth in a Unity Marketing study released this week. The study reveals that 65 percent of affluent shoppers say social has impacted their purchase decisions. Nearly half say social media information inspired them to visit a website and/or make a purchases. Facebook in particular is an important channel for small businesses trying to convert online audiences across income demographics. Forty-eight percent of SMB marketers say their Facebook campaigns have led to conversions."
As I mentioned above, every time there is a change in Facebook's interface a lot of people complain about it. This time, most experts agree these changes are for the better.
"Open Graph, which will usher in a new era of apps, will enable Facebook users to easily share experiences together in realtime. Although Facebook will undoubtedly claim that these changes were primarily made to provide a better user experience, the higher levels of engagement and better data will result in revenue growth."
Facebook is really behind small businesses, this a good incentive for trying out their ad campaign tools. And now more than ever you have better control over who is going to se your ad.
As I mentioned above, this feature will have great impact on business pages. Once it's released, fans and people, who liked the page will have a reason to return to the page.
Good brands doing a good job with Facebook and as I mentioned on the tweet; it is very easy to do it with YWD (see The Frantics' example).

Its true, if you are actively promoting your business on-line, your are doing all the things you need to do on Facebook to be successful. Facebook, like any social media is really just a tool. Many people get overwhelmed by the idea that using Facebook is creating more work that they can’t take on. The reality is that if you are doing all the right things to promote your business on-line, adding Facebook is incremental labor wise, with potential for much larger impact growth wise.
Let’s take blogging for example, it happens to be one of the most powerful tools available to you for on-line marketing success. In fact, sites with blogs, generate 55% more traffic than sites without blogs. Blogs let you create content, content that can be shared and is then indexed by search engines. If you are blogging, then Facebook is one more great place for you to push out all your awesome content, it is also a place to have conversations about your content and a great way to get more followers to your business.
Let’s say you also do on-line promotions. Maybe once a month you add fresh content to your site by promoting a limited time offer. You may even send this offer out to your email marketing list. Well if you are already doing that, why not also promote this on your Facebook page and get it in front of an even larger audience?
Or maybe you have been bitten by the SEO bug because you got a new client through a Google search and now you are doing everything possible to get your site optimized so you can be found by even more potential clients searching for your product or service. You know what also really, really helps SEO? Facebook! By default, Facebook pages are public and if you are smart, you will keep your page that way so that you can get indexed by Google.
Maybe you like to keep your clients up-to-date with a monthly or quarterly newsletter? Rather than waiting untill the end of the month, or the quarter to share your updates, why don’t you use Facebook to send out more regular updates and then use that same content to create a Newsletter that is a round up of what you have shared all month/quarter. You’re already doing the work, Facebook makes it easier to send out more regular updates to an even larger audience and engage in conversations with this audience, something that isn’t really done with newsletters.
Do you hold regular events? If you do, what are you doing today to promote these events? An update on your web site? Emails to your client list? The point is your are already creating content for these events, why not add this content to your Facebook site too?
If you are really working the on-line medium and creating regular content to stay engaged with your customers, adding Facebook into the mix won’t create all that much more work, in fact it may even make some ways that you communicate with your customers even easier. Instead of thinking, how can I take on one more thing, start thinking what am I doing now that I can repurpose for Facebook?

This past week: I stayed with the Facebook theme. More than ever bloggers and main stream publication are talking about the importance of Facebook as small business marketing platform. Facebook's resent chances to their interface and functionality are geared exclusively to the SMB; even Facebook's new CFO is talking about their commitment to give SMBs the best possible experience with incentives and analytics tools. To summarize, whether you are fan of Facebook or not it is clear that not being on Facebook is not an option.
We can't emphasize this enough, unfortunately there is still business setting up a personal profile instead of a Facebook business page. Pilar clearly points out the advantages of having a proper business page.
Well you might not have the budget or the resources from some of the companies listed on this article but, it does give you an idea of what is possible.
I firmly believe that Facebook levels the field when it comes to marketing. Your small business can compete and be as effective as any other major brand.
Sheryl Sandberg worked for Google before moving to Facebook, she is partly responsible for Google's mega successful search-advertising business.
